In terms of the making of the magazine, my role was to produce the magazine cover. The way in which i did this was by refering to the research Anisha done, which was about Entertainment Weekly & Empire. When looking and analysing the research, me and anisha realised that Entertainment Weekly was best suited to our film in terms of drawing the audience to the actors who play the characters as relating to the character is difficult for the audience due to the characters living such complicated lives. While producing the magazine cover I kept to the codes and conventions of Entertainment Weekly to make sure its proffesional and realistic as possible.
When it came to editing the trailer, we were prepared and orgainisated for it. this is because we used our storyboard to help us with the sequences the footage goes in and what sort of effects are needed for each scene. My role within editing was the main role, this was to edit the whole teaser trailer. The software i used to edited and produce the teaser trailer was final cut pro. As i already knew how to use this partically editing software i put my self forward to edit.
We showed our first piece of footage to Mr. Goddard who commented back giving us advice on how we can improve. What came from this feedback is how we can expand on the use of props to execute transitions. For example, zooming on the unique pattern of the candle to create a transition onto the next scene would be more creative than simply taking a pre-made transition from Final Cut Pro.
Me and anisha decided to do the filming for the bath scene - The bath scene was filmed at Anisha's house. I decided to go to anishas around 4:30pm, this is because it was dark and allowed the footage for this scene to have look we wanted which was to be slightly dark and sinister. It was also raining that day which added to the effect of the footage. I role in the filming of the bath scene was to act as i am the main male character. I also helped Anisha out with setting up the candles on the bath and the sceneary, which was important as the lighting was the main aspect of mis-en-scene is this partically part of our teaser trailer.
We first started filming the drug use scenes by using the green room as the location. Me and anisha set up the props by contrasting it against the black sheet. This was to ensure that the props were our main focus. After setting the green room up I took the role of filming a few test shots while Anisha droped the drugs infront of the camera. After taking a few clips of these we noticed we had to have the camera slightly futher back to ensure the drugs were in main focus. Me and anisha had to experiment with the lighting as we wanted to make sure the drugs were the main focus of the scene.
Me and anisha brainstormed some questions to place in our questionnaire which could help my group and I when it comes to the production of our film trailer. Due to me believing that our storyline is quite complex for an audience of 15+, questions like this were placed apart of our questionnaire to see what our targeted audience (of 15+) thought of this. Many of the questions incorporated asked questions similar to this in order for us to design a teaser trailer which would interest our targeted audience specifically. After printing 5 copies of the questionnaire out which I had written up on word I randomly handed the questionnaire to 5 students of my school of this age group but of both genders. The answers were collected and we finally converted all the results from the audience feedback into pie charts. These pie charts made, make looking at all the results from our data simple, by displaying our results according to colour and size. rrrrrrr An in depth analysis was conducted on scenes specifically chosen from a set of trailers. Individual evaluations were made focusing on aspects such as lighting, editing and storyline.
For example, looking at the film 'From Hell' which I had found. me and Anisha annotated how the use of lighting within a scene can create a dark atmospheric feel whilst making the character and props well lit. What we found interesting was the bathtub the character 'Johnny Depp' was placed in with the use of a candle light as a form of light source. What me & Anisha had concluded from the scene was that the candle light could represent hope and how there is little 'hope' in his life, as it is the only true light source available in the scene. After watching 3 A2 trailers I made notes on the mise-en-scen to help me judge them by 1) idea 2) close attention to mis-en-scene.
The first teaser trailer was 'Hazard'. I rated the setting/location quite high, this is because the location was deserted and very 'different'. Also they paid very close attention to make-up and costume and they both come across in great detail in the trailer. The use of a white full body suit and red contact lences suited the whole story idea properly and effectively. The second teaser trailer was 'Raising the Stakes'. This teaser was too fast pace, making it hard to follow at times. The lighting wasnt really that good as they did not use daylight - no atmosphere lighting, which created a very amateurish appeal. Finally, the third teaser trailer I analysised was the 'Film Noir'. The idea was not very creative and innovative as it just followed the conventions of a typicall film noir movie/trailer. The costume and make-up fitted the style of 'FILM NOIR' as the costumes were suits, hats etc. Locations were determined based on what suited the genre of our film. We wanted to pick a location which reflected the characters emotion through the surroundings. This idea was thought upon when I found the trailer for Drugstore Cowboy, and Anisha de-constructed it into screenshots. The main characters who themselves are quite un-organised are placed in an urban environment with red bricks and dusty windows mirroring their unsettled lives. The trailer demonstrates how the location in which a character is in can imitate their well-being and lifestyle. Relating back to the screenshot annotated, the surrounding bricks represent entrapment as a result of their lifestyle however, their positioning and posture throughout generate a laid-back personality highlighting their well-being. Therefore choosing the right location is key as de-constructing the mise-en-scene can tell a lot about the character represented.
Taking into consideration our ideas and storyline we had developed our basic costume for our characters. As the male character had resorted into drug use, his outfit would be more rough and ruggid, as if he has lost all meaning to live. On the other hand, the females character's costume being more professional and well looked after due to her job.
