1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Hi, welcome to our film promotion package evaluation, where my group and I will be discussing and evaluating the teaser trailer of our new film called 'Separation'. Here we have...to discuss the way in which our teaser trailer develops the forms and conventions of a real media product.
*Show faded-wash-look clip from Unknown*
The way in which forms and conventions were developed in relation to a real media product, such as the film 'Unknown', was through the use of flashbacks. Flashbacks are commonly used in romance genre based films to provide an insight into the narrative between characters by reminiscing about their past times together. The scene itself is repetitively shown throughout the teaser trailer as a constant reminder whilst demonstrating the importance of the scene. The use of a faded-wash-look as an effect placed on top of the flashback scene in the 'Unknown' allows the audience to instantly understand that its a flashback.
*Show Final Cut Pro where the effects indie red, bleach bypass and romantic are layered on top of the scene*
Our media product of 'Separation' used this convention by placing an indie red colour over our flashback scene using both the bleach bypass and romantic effect on Final Cut Pro to enhance the concept of it being a flashback. Therefore, highlighting to the audience the relationship of the characters in flashback form.
*Flashback scene from Unknown, side by side with flashback scene from Separation*
Here when comparing the two scenes side by side, clear comparisons can be made as our film 'Separation' follows the conventions displayed by 'Unknown' when it comes to flashbacks. The effects used are very similar in displaying a surreal feeling differing from the other scenes in the trailer, but to find out whether our targeted audience thought that conventions were followed we asked...
*Clip of people talking about whether conventions were followed in terms of flashback*
Although aspects were followed when replicating our flashback scene, some of the forms and conventions were also challenged. For example, we altered the speed of the clip by fast forwarding the scene to show how time is manipulated when he takes the drugs.
One of the sub genres of thriller is psychological thriller being typically based around the concepts of crime, murder, more importantly drug use and insanity. One of our inspirational trailers was of 'Drugstore Cowboy' were the conventions of drug use and crime were used. We challenged the way drug use was used in our teaser trailer by combining the conventions of the genre romance, alongside this convention of thriller.
In 'Drugstore Cowboy' blurred effects were created to express their drug use to the audience. When using the blurred effect it suggests unclarity and uncertainty, similar to what we used to illustrate the impact of drug use on our character and his emotions in many of our scenes.
*Show scenes where blurred effect were used*
The element of time was strongly manipulated challenging the conventions of a romance genre based film where scenes are typically shown in soft fades and slow pace. We altered time by speeding scenes up such as the clock scene which links with the way in which 'Requiem for a Dream' altered time, therefore sticking to the conventions of a psychological thriller genre conducted by 'Requiem for a Dream' through challenging the conventions set by the romance genre.
*Show side by side clip of the clock scenes for both products*
2) How effective is the combination of your media product and ancillary texts?
*Show all our media products when talking about this - poster, magazine and teaser trailer playing behind whilst introducing the second question*
A common factor between our teaser trailer and our magazine cover is the interaction between our main characters. As shown in the prominent flashback scene in our teaser trailer, both characters are shown interacting with one another positively. This positive relationship of the characters was reflected on the magazine cover, not only showing the characters but the positive relationship between the actors themselves.
*Photographs took for magazine - as actors*
However, our main storyline opposes against the idea of both characters being together, therefore creating an interest to our audience between this ancillary text (the magazine) and the storyline of the teaser trailer. From getting to know the stars behind 'Separation' from the magazine the audience will be interested to know how these people play such complicated characters, therefore be interested in what the film itself has to offer, if the magazine was seen before the teaser trailer.
*show puff and quote - "interview with Josh Pearce and Anisha Sehmi"*
But in order for our audience to recognise the magazine as part of the teaser trailer for 'Separation', aspects such as costume were kept very much similar. A sophisticated cardigan alongside a plain coloured top were worn by the female character/actress for both the magazine and teaser trailer. Costume was also kept the same for the main male character for the teaser trailer, magazine and poster, (a plain white t-shirt and black tie) as the male character makes an appearance for all three products. Therefore aspects such as costume of our male character especially, plays an important role in linking all of our ancillary texts together.
*Costume worn by male character in teaser trailer, magazine and poster*
Another aspect discretely used in all three of our products is iconography such as patterns. The pattern of circles were used repetitively for our magazine and teaser trailer. For our teaser trailer the symbolic use of the pattern circles was to create the element of blur and uncertainty. Therefore, in order to highlight the use of circles as this symbolic meaning to the storyline, circles were only added in these two scenes.
*Where female character appears/disappears and the train scene at the end*
Highlighting the circles in these two scenes specifically represents how the female character is linked with the train concept in terms of storyline. As circles were only present when the male character appeared to be uncertain about the female character, this iconography was carried onto the magazine by it being included in the costume of the male character and in the masthead of the magazine.
The colour scheme for the ancillary texts were kept fairly the same with our teaser trailer. Using warm colours such as reds and yellows in our teaser trailer when the characters are together, we transferred the warmth he felt with the female character to his replaced feelings of warmth to the drugs he takes.
*flick of the lighter and drugs dropping*
The colours of red and yellow were expressed onto the magazines font colour where the characters/ actors are together. During the bathroom scene the colours blue connotate the opposite of using colours such as reds and yellows, representing cold and unwelcoming emotions. A mixture of the colours blue and yellow were used a part of the poster highlighting both the warm and cold emotions of the storyline of 'Separation' as shown in the teaser trailer.

Question 4: how did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Hi my name is Josh, for this question i will discuss the various media technologies used in the construction of our research, media product, and evaluation on our film Separation. We have used a number of different techniques to help us construct our media products in a productive and creative way for example miss-en-scene, camera angles, sound, etc. Also we used different computerised software's like Photoshop and Final-cut pro to combine our material footage to produce our final products.
the equipment used to produce our footage.
During the construction of our teaser trailer, poster, and magazine cover we needed various technical equipment to allow us to produce our advertising media text. The most important piece of equipment we used was a (...) video camera (photo of camera), this was important because it allowed us to film and collect the necessary footage we needed to use for our teaser trailer. Another piece of equipment we used to help us with the filming of our teaser trailer was a try-pod (tripod) photo, this was used to help keep the camera straight when needed for a still shot for a panning shot. (examples) the final piece of equipment we used was a (...) still camera, this was also used to take still images for our magazine cover and film poster (example).
what software's did we use to help produce the teaser trailer, poster and magazine cover.
The software we used for the construction of the teaser trailer was Final-cut pro, this is a creative software that allows you to deconstruct as well as constructing media text, add effects, change sound, etc. It has many elements that helped us produce our teaser trailer, we took advantage of this sources we had and rearranged the footage we had taken into a successful media text. Some of the techniques it allowed us to do was changing the time duration of certain footage, change the contrast of the footage, place voice overs, merge footage together, etc. (various examples)
* walking scene - coming soon ( effect - dream & film grain)
*spinning scenes (effect - bleach bypass, trails)
voiceover; haaris
*Flashback/cafe scene ( effects - indie red, romantic, bleach bypass)
*hand separating in cafe scene (effects - cold steel, romantic, bleach bypass)
*bath scene splashing (effects - water pane)
